This microbiology lecture explains about rickettial infection by rickettsia rickettsii, rickettsia prowazekii, rickettsia typhi
The rickettsiae are a diverse collection of obligately intracellular Gram-negative bacteria found in ticks, lice, fleas, mites, chiggers, and mammals. These zoonotic pathogens cause infections that disseminate in the blood to many organs
Rickettsia species are small, Gram-negative bacilli that are obligate intracellular parasites of eukaryotic cells. This genus consists of two antigenically defined groups: spotted fever group and typhus group, which are related; scrub typhus rickettsiae differ in lacking lipopolysaccharide, peptidoglycan, and a slime layer, and belong in the separate, although related, genus Orientia.
rickettsias require a host in which to grow, such as an animal, a fertilized chicken egg (chick embryo), an arthropod, or a culture of mammalian tissue cells. The host serves as a very complex 'medium' for such nutritionally demanding microorganisms.
The method of growing Rickettsia in chicken embryos was invented by Ernest William Goodpasture and his colleagues at Vanderbilt University in the early 1930s. Source of the article published in description is Wikipedia. I am sharing their material. © by original content developers of Wikipedia.
