How Does WhatsApp make money and what is its business model?
Half of the world’s internet users are on WhatsApp every week - that is over 2.8 billion people. It is owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, and it is the largest messaging platform in the world.
While Instagram has a revenue per user of about $44, YouTube has $12, for WhatsApp, this is less than 0.36 dollars per user. Keep in mind that while Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion, it paid $19 billion for WhatsApp - which was the most expensive tech acquisition at that time.
Why is Whatsapp’s revenue so low? How is it making any revenue without ads to begin with? Why has Mark Zuckerberg been fine with not monetizing WhatsApp so far?
