Extreme Lives: The Deadly Voyages of Diu’s Fishermen
“The wind may turn back — but a Kharva never does.”
Welcome to the new episode of Bharat EK Khoj. This time, Captain Samdish Bhatia sails 1300 km away from Delhi to the wild, roaring edge of the Arabian Sea — Vanakbara Port in Diu.
Vanakbara is home to a community of fishermen, or Kharvas, who spend 8 out of 12 months sailing the sea, chasing fish and a living.
We spent days capturing their lives in this cinematic episode. From Thandel Ramesh, a senior captain, to the young Khalasis learning the ropes and telling their stories of resilience and camaraderie.
How do they catch and store fish? How dangerous is the sea? How do they prepare for their trips, and do they even make any money?
Are you ready for this cinematic voyage? Presenting: Extreme Lives: The Deadly Voyages of Diu’s Fishermen
