Violent scenes were witnessed in several parts of Manipur even as thousands took to the streets under the banner of the student body All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur (ATSUM) on Friday. Protesters came face to face with cops in Torbung of Churachandpur, as tear gas shells were fired in a market area to bring the situation under control.

EastMojo received reports that sporadic episodes of violence were reported in the Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts, respectively. The situation remained volatile following reports of vandalism and communal tensions. Effigies of Chief Minister N Biren Singh were also burnt in Churachandpur amid protests.

Section 144 of the CrPc has been imposed in several districts, and sources have informed that a curfew is likely to be imposed across the state "due to the likelihood of causing a serious breach of peace, disturbances to public tranquillity, and grave danger to human lives and properties."

Meanwhile, the Manipur government has suspended mobile internet for the next five days in Manipur to tackle the worsening law and order situation.
