How did Bira 91, India's iconic craft beer brand, collapse? From raising over $200 million and acquiring The Beer Cafe to failing to pay employee salaries and ousting its founder, Ankur Jain, this is the complete case study on the shocking rise and fall of Bira 91.
Bira 91 started with a unique idea to bring craft beer to India, building a brand everyone loved. It attracted huge investors like Sequoia Capital and Japan's Kirin Holdings. So, what went wrong?
In this in-depth analysis, we explore the three critical mistakes that destroyed the company:
Terrible Unit Economics: Burning cash and relying on investor money.
Internal Governance: Reports of a "family-run business" culture.
The FATAL Mistake: A legal conversion from Private Limited to Limited that halted sales for months and allowed competitors to take over.
This is a story of branding, ambition, massive financial losses, and critical lessons for every entrepreneur.

VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
Hi everybody,
If you are someone who wants to learn how to build a legendary brand in a market full of Sharks, then this episode is for you!! Because the story that I am about to tell you today is the story of a 17 year old boy who had no money, no brand value and no investor backing and yet he went on to build a 2000 crore dairy business and that too in the presence of so many competitors!!
Now just so you know, the milk industry is one of the most brutal industries in the country, because your product will perish in 4 days, your margins are hardly 3-5% and if you dont move your inventory fast enough, you will be out of business in no time!!
Secondly, during that time, Amul was the pioneer of the white revolution of India. So much so that, in the 1960s India, if you look at this graph, we were importing 5 lakh tonnes of milk powder!!! but by 1990s, we became a net exporter of milk powder!!
This was the effect of the White Revolution on India!!
So during this time, all these giant milk brands and cooperatives had the perfect recipe for domination which were money, brand value and technology, whereas this 17 year old boy neither had money nor did he have the technology to scale his business. And let alone brand value nobody knew he even existed!! This boy that I am talking about is a one of the most underrated entrepreneurs of India who goes by the name Satish Kumar and the brand that he built is none other than Milkymist!! And Today, Milky Mist is such a successful brand that they sell 2000 cr worth of dairy products all across india!!
So in this episode, lets go deep and find out,
How did a 17 year old build a 2000 cr business?
What were the Business strategies that helped Satish build a 2000 cr company with very less money?
And what are the lessons that we need to learn from the rise of Satish and Milkymist?
